What is Camp Hope? In the summer of 1999, Rev. Diane Parrish had a vision to find a new and exciting way to minister to the families of men and women who are incarcerated. Noting that inmates' children are one of the most overlooked groups of children in North America, she founded a special camp just for them! The purpose of Camp Hope is to help each child learn they are precious in God's eyes and to provide a positive, fun-filled week away from the worries of their world. Camp Hope is comprised of two camps that occur during the same week: Cornerstone and the Leadership Training Academy. Cornerstone, the younger camp, is for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade children living in metro Atlanta whose parent(s) are incarcerated. Campers are paired with teen counselors who provide mentoring and guidance during the week of camp. Every minute of the day is structured, filled with outdoor sports, crafts, swimming, singing, campfires and MUCH MORE! In 2003, Camp Hope opened its "Leadership Training Academy." The LTA is for those young men and women who attended Camp Hope as a Cornerstone camper. Candidates are recommended by their teen counselor, adult counselors and/or camp directors. LTA is highly structured and co-exists with Camp Hope. Their purpose is multi-dimensional. They learn how to embrace HOPE for tomorrow and: - have self-control
- be a leader
- develop a personal mission statement
- develop group strategies
- develop personal goals and ideals
- implement all that they learn.
